The Georgian angostura bottle is a dash bottle for bitters, infusions, liqueurs and homemades that are to be included in drinks in drops. It is therefore perfect for all ingredients, of which you really only need a pinch to give that extra touch of balance or, otherwise, intense flavor.
WHEN CLASS IS NOT WATER ...
... but angostura! The lines are simple and rounded, but the feeling is one of upward momentum; even the pourer is designed and detailed.
CHARACTER AND GIFT IDEA
We are in the presence of a dash bottle with a distinct character, a gem that is also perfect as a gift idea.
The somewhat thick glass is suitable for chaotic evenings and for being handled absent-mindedly and quickly-a detail that makes all the difference!
CURIOSITY
Angostura, or Angostura Bitter, is a liqueur that originated in the city of the same name, now called Ciudad Bolivar and located in northern Venezuela. Its intense and distinctive blend comes from the infusion in alcohol of orange peels, cloves, gentian root, cardamom and a variety of tropical herbs kept jealously secret.
It has a very high alcohol content, about 45%, and its very strong and intense taste allows it to be used only in small quantities, such as to enhance the taste of sauces in cooking, or to give added prominence to cocktails such as the Old Fashioned, the Rob Roy and the unforgettable Manhattan.
TASTE AND BLEND
Precisely because of its such a strong taste, angostura-which comes in a color tending to black-is never served neat and is sold on the market in 200-ml bottles.
Its inventor was a German doctor named Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, who in the early 1800s devised angostura after much research into the medicinal properties of tropical herbs, coming to the conclusion that this particular blend was capable of aiding appetite and digestion.
THE SECRET OF ANGOSTURA
In addition to the presence of tropical herbs and spices in the ingredients (and not the bark of the angostura tree as claimed by many books on bartending) the formula is jealously guarded in a New York bank and only four people currently living know about it.
About twenty years ago, the ink on the official documents began to fade and, after careful transcription in a secret location, the document with the formula was divided into four, sealed in separate envelopes, sealed with sealing wax and sent to the New York bank. The envelopes were mailed one after the other, only after confirmation of receipt of the previous one and deposited in a safe; they have not been opened since.
Today theAngostura Company not only produces the aromatic bitter, but its products include liqueurs, spirits, fine rums, over-the-top sauces and bases for punches.
