MINT JULEP
Historical background
Etymologically, the word julep comes from the Arabic 'gulab' or rosewater (ab+gul). Julep (which only later became 'mint'), has a nebulous and ancient origin, so much so that it is still a drink with much appeal today. The earliest records are from the early 1800s, in the southern United States, specifically in Virginia, as a simple sugary drink, before being introduced in Washington in the bar of the Willard Hotel by a senator of the time. By the 1900s the drink began to be made with Bourbon.
Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 sprigs of mint
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- a splash of soda
- 2-3 cubes of crushed ice
- 1 part bourbon
- sprigs of mint for decoration
Preparation
Mash the mint and sugar in a large or medium tumbler and rub everything inside the glass itself.
Remove the mint.
Dissolve the sugar in the soda, add crushed ice and bourbon.
Do not stir.
Decorate with mint sprigs.
